BLOG: Tony Wilson, senior partner, Hill Dickinson

Kathy Perrin in our Liverpool office has enjoyed an experience few lawyers ever do - a case heard in the House of Lords. And she only qualified two years ago. The case of Young vs Catholic Care (the latter our clients) is actually the second we have had in the Lords in a short space of time.

Most cases stop at the Court of Appeal and it's rare for them to be given leave to appeal to the Lords. For any litigation lawyer it is a dream come true. She did a great job and was even quoted in The Times on the implications of the law around compensation for child abuse victims. What with the grim news emerging from Jersey, this will be an area likely to stay high profile.

Judge Mental: Bring back Denis

The Daily Post's new blogger Judge Mental has just dispatched another briefing from inside Liverpool Crown Court. Here it is:

All that crazy talk about aliens landing, Daleks and Davros last week got me thinking. It was a nice feeling, if a little strange.

On to this week’s thrilling instalment from inside the, um, bowels of Liverpool Crown Court. Yes, the football season’s just kicked off and court was all a flutter this week with the grunts and squeals of the annual ushers versus barristers kick-about in the corridors using a much missed judge’s wig as a ball. It wasn’t on his head at the time, which was a pity.

Row over farmer's failed legal aid application

A MERSEYSIDE solicitor has branded as 'farcical' a decision to refuse legal aid for a farmer who had won the right to take the Government to the High Court over the slaughter of his cattle.

David Dobbin lost all 560 of his cows after they were seized by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs following what he claims was an 18-month “witch hunt.

When a judge granted the Chester-based farmer leave to pursue a judicial review into Defra’s actions, it was hailed as a landmark decision for British farmers.

I wonder how many businesses have been caught out by the intricacies of the Statutory Dispute Procedures since they were introduced in October 2004 ... hundreds ... maybe thousands.

Have they achieved what the Government set out to achieve namely problems being resolved in the workplace and consequently less claims for the Employment Tribunals to deal with? The simple answer is no.

In relation to the recent sale of Burton Foods to a private equity backed purchaser, the Daily Post has concentrated on the number of jobs that are likely to be lost at their Moreton factory.
