Veteran lawyer rises to the top

AS he becomes the president of the Law Society of England and Wales this week, the thing Andrew Holroyd will miss the most is his clients in Liverpool.
Mr Holroyd, a partner at Jackson and Canter, takes up the full-time post, which is based in London, on Thursday.

THE incoming president of the National Law Society addressed a legal aid conference recently held in Liverpool.
A full house of Merseyside lawyers were in attendance at the Holiday Inn for the conference, which addressed the subject of the Carter Review – the future of legal aid and its impact on solicitors and legal representation for the public.

LIVERPOOL Law Society's inaugural Legal Awards take place this Saturday night.
Guests at the black tie event, at the Crowne Plaza hotel, will enjoy a champagne reception followed by five-course dinner, before the city's solicitors, barristers and firms find out who will be crowned the best performers of the year.
"The awards are a fantastic opportunity for Liverpool lawyers to show we have got the knowledge and the expertise to rival any large commercial city in England and Wales," said Helen Broughton, whose tenure as LLS president passed to Donal Bannon this year.

The Private Members Bill seeks to reverse the growing problem of 'ghost town Britain' and the continuing decline of local shops, services and facilities.
