AROUND 50% of office workers use Facebook, Twitter or other social networking sites for personal use during the working day, wasting an average of 40 minutes a week per employee and costing the economy around £1.38billion a year.

One marketing company dismissed one of its employees after she said her job was "boring" on Facebook, because it believed it her comment displayed disrespect and dissatisfaction that undermined her relationship with the company. Virgin Atlantic also sacked 13 crew for describing passengers as "chavs".

Now employers are increasingly monitoring staff internet and email use in the workplace and a significant number have banned access to social networking sites during office hours.

A LAWYER served notice on an Australian couple that they had lost their home by using the social networking website Facebook.

The Australian Capital Territory Supreme Court approved lawyer Mark McCormack's application to use Facebook to serve legally binding documents to tell the Canberra couple that they had lost their house after defaulting on a loan.

THE internet is playing "an increasingly prominent role in divorce cases," according to Liverpool-based awyers.

They say people are increasingly turning to social networking sites such as Facebook to vent their anger, take revenge or simply set the record straight.

The most recent example came when Lancashire millionaire businessman Gary Dean posted details of his wife's divorce settlement via his own website in a bid to silence local gossips he claimed had branded him ruthless and greedy.
