AS THE 2008 Culture Year progresses towards its close I took myself to the Everyman this week to see an excellent play based around the era of the club Eric's in Matthew Street which I frequented in my 'teens (along with the Everyman.)
An excellent production with an ageless plot and those who have been or intend to go will relate easily to it.
Eric's has become the talk of legend in some ways, but there is no doubt it formed the nucleus for some key bands of recent decades and played a significant part in peoples lives at its time.
My admiration for the Bunnymen has been well documented in these pages and Eric's saw the "formation" of the Crucial three (Ian Mcullogh, Pete Wylie and Julian Cope) ultimately leading the Bunnymen, The Mighty Wah and The Teardrop Explodes.
The lyrics of some of these bands most famous songs fitted well with the plot of the play.
Our cultural offering has been vibrant as ever this year and not confined to Liverpool alone.
The Bunnymen began a tour and received excellent reviews for their Royal Albert Hall London gig in September repeated at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City last week to be topped I'm sure only by their homecoming performance at the Arena in November.
In spite of the daily bad news from the stock and banking markets we should take comfort from the considerable rise in our profile and economy over recent years and there is little doubt in my mind we will ride out the current difficult times and emerge stronger if not unscathed in the not too distant future as we have done in the not too distant past.
