BLOG: Rachel Donovan - My return

Posted by Vicky Anderson on July 10, 2008 7:09 PM |

Just back from my maternity leave and so, I apologise for not updating my blog sooner.

I have a 10 pounds eight ounces excuse!

After watching Britain's largest babies last week, I discovered that my big boy Noah James, who was born at Ormskirk Hospital on the December 9, is in the top 2%. In fact, I had the heaviest baby in Crosby in 2007, which I am very proud about (as you can imagine!).

I returned to work on the May 28, 2008, and after being at work for the morning, I felt l had never been away. Fortunately, I now work five minutes away from where I live as our busy clinical negligence department moved to St Johns Road in Waterloo to join our personal injury team and this has cut my journey time by 35 minutes. This is great as every minute counts when getting two young children ready in the morning.

Whilst on my maternity leave I had a lot of time to think! And I was actually able to think about other things than Iggle Piggle and Ninky nonks.

To date once we have settled claims for our clients we have not been that good at bringing our successes to the attention of the wider public for a variety of reasons. It is important that people are aware of the medico-legal skills we can offer when a family is faced with a medical disaster and that expert support and advice is available to them at a time when they need it most

With medical negligence no two cases are the same and each has its own challenges but we will get new instructions at least once a month that relate to a delay in the diagnosis of cancer, missed fractures, retained product and obstetrics/ gynaecology and a whole range of other interesting problems. Therefore as a department, we have the knowledge to advise fully on a wide range of medical topics.

I have been with Goodman's for more than seven years and I have been investigating a couple of cases for the whole time, which is why when clients come into the office and ask how long the case will take I cannot be too specific.

One of my longstanding cases is about the danger of iron and the disastrous consequences of iron overload. This is such a sad case as the negligence has had such a huge impact on the clients' lives, which are irreversible. The case has predominantly been run by the mother of the two claimants and I know, since having my own children, that her strength and fight is all based on the love she feels for her family.

Proving a medical negligence claim for clients like this family is one of the most rewarding jobs you could do.

If anyone wants, any advice on iron overload and its consequence feel free to contact me on 0151-257-6000 or email at red@goodmanslaw.co.uk.
