SOLICITOR Nick Freeman said he has registered “Mr Loophole as a trademark in order to prevent other lawyers from using it.
Freeman got the nickname from the media after a number of cases in which he secured acquittals for show business and football celebrities facing motoring charges.
He said he had registered the “Mr Loophole name with the UK Patent Office because other law firms were trying to cash in on his fame.
His firm, Cheshire-based Freeman & Co, charges at least £4,000 to handle cases which sometimes involve only one day’s attendance at court.
Although the charges are sometimes minor, such as speeding fines, clients find it worthwhile to pay up in order to avoid a driving ban.
Freeman specialises in examining the prosecution case to see whether the police and the Crown Prosecution Service have followed the correct procedure. If they have failed to do so, the magistrates often have no option but to acquit the defendant.
