Get advice of laying off staff

NEW statistics from the Confederation of British Industry suggest that unemployment will rise in 2008, as financial pressures resulting from the credit crunch may lead to mass redundancies

Experts at North West law firm Cobbetts have warned that employers who need to dismiss any part of their workforce must ensure their redundancy procedure is up to date and legally acceptable to avoid further financial problems for their business.

Judith Watson, head of employment, said: “If employers need to make redundancies, good communication is of the utmost importance to avoid litigation.

“The main point to embrace when going through the redundancy process is to keep communication channels open. It is vital that issues and actions are outlined clearly and that each employee understands the process and your reasons. With so many steps to follow, it is best to get expert advice to ensure fair treatment for staff and minimise the risk of legal action.”
