THE 16th Annual Law Firm Survey produced by PricewaterhouseCoopers reports a “fantastic year” for leading law firms, but a mixed performance for North West firms.

SOUTHPORT-based law firm Barnetts Solicitors got into the festive spirit and dug deep into their pockets to raise £300 for the Sefton Children’s Trust’s Toy Appeal.

The money raised was used to buy over 60 toys including jigsaws, cuddly toys and board games, which will ensure that Christmas is a very merry one for local disadvantaged children and their families.

REAL estate specialists at Mace & Jones have advised on a unique partnership between a supermarket and the Territorial Army – to fund a new store and an army base at the same time.

The Liverpool firm has worked on the deal between the North West of England and Isle of Man Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA) and Asda, which will see the superstore build the association a new Territorial Army centre and joint cadet building at Netherton Way, Bootle.

New scheme to keep young offenders out of court

A new scheme to deal with first time young offenders who have committed a minor offence will be piloted early next year.

The scheme aims to stop them going to court unnecessarily, while at the same time ensuring that they make amends for their offence via an apology to the victim.

Escape drama at Liverpool Crown Court

A YOUTH made a dramatic bid for freedom yesterday after being told that he would have to serve four-and-a-half years detention for an attack on a woman teacher who he dragged feet first from her car.

When the sentence was announced Patrick Garret, 18, vaulted over the door of the dock at Liverpool Crown Court and fled from the courtroom.

LEGAL firm DLA Piper is one of the sponsors of a festive Carols by Candlelight concert being held in the Anglican Cathedral tonight to raise money for the charity ChildLine.

Judge left 'sick' by horrid court case

AN EXPERIENCED judge who had to watch horrific videos of young children being sexually abused told a court that she had felt “physically sick”.

Judge Maureen Roddy viewed the videos and similarly disturbing photographs two days ago but found them so distressing that she adjourned sentence until yesterday so she could be “calm and detached” rather than having “an emotive and immediate response.”

Top honour for Napthens man

ANDREW Clare, head of the corporate department at Lancashire-based Napthens Solicitors, has been named the Intermediary of the Year by the North West Society of Chartered Accountants.

Mr Clare picked up the award at the event, held at Ribby Hall Village, near Preston. He was among a group of 12 top businesses and individuals to pick up the accountancy and business awards.

BARRISTERS will continue to wear wigs in civil courts from January even though judges will abandon the traditional horsehair headgear, it has been revealed.

A survey carried out by the Bar Council found a majority of people supported retention of the world famous hairpieces in civil and family cases.

Having just about come to terms with the derby injustice I felt able to accept an invitation to visit the director’s box at Anfield on Wednesday night for the Porto game.

I was a blue in enemy territory but I managed to keep my emotions in check, applauding mildly (but politely) at the appropriate times.

Fortified against the cold with a few pints of Guinness I took my seat, with the result carefully written on the betting slip in my pocket.
