MARTINE SNOWDON, a barrister at Exchange Chambers, in Liverpool, has achieved her lifelong ambition of qualifying for the World Triathlon Championships, to be held in Vancouver next year.

Ms Snowdon achieved her qualifying time at the recent Bala Triathlon, and is now set to take her place in the British team.

She said: “It’s all happened really quickly. I liked the idea of having a go at a triathlon so got myself a bike last Christmas and started cycling to work.

“I then stepped things up by doing some early morning swimming and a few evening runs.

Mother-of-three Ms Snowdon only completed her first triathlon in June and surprised herself. She added: “After my first triathlon, I realised I wasn’t too far off the qualifying time for the world championships so I decided to really give it a go, she added.

Ms Snowdon’s finishing time of 2 hours, 13 minutes made her the fastest finisher not attached to an official club.

She said: “I’m absolutely thrilled, if a little exhaust- ed. I am hoping to take the children over to Vancouver next year so they can watch mum compete.

Tom Handley, director of chambers at Exchange Chambers, said: “The whole of chambers will be cheering on Martine when she takes part in the world championships next year.

Exactly how is it relevant that this barrister is a mother? I thought the name of this website was 'the LEGAL week'. So surely a more pertinent headline would be "Barrister makes grade for World Triathlon". The familial relations of this lawyer are hardly key to the story. Typical passive sexism, yet never fails to depress me. Especially in connection with someone who has clearly achieved a lot outside of the domestic sphere.
