A LIVERPOOL lawyer who braved torrential rain to make a 350-mile cycle ride to London has raised over £2,600 for charity.
Dave Young, an insurance partner at DWF, joined Royal & SunAlliance Motability (R&SAM) employees Mark Jackson, Andrew McKellar and Andy Warren for the four-day ride during some of the rainiest weather on record.
The trip was part of Cyclability 2007, which was organised by RSAM to raise funds for people with disabilities who need extra financial help to get them on the road and also for Cancer Research UK.
The team, who were also joined by Owain Reed and Mark Wheeler from the London branch of Motability, started at the R&SAM office in Liverpool and travelled to Motability's head office in Central London via Bristol, covering between 60 and 120 miles a day.
Dave, a keen cyclist who lives on the Wirral, said: "The constant deluge made conditions very difficult and as the journey went on, we ended up cycling through knee-high floodwater on roads impassable to vehicles. I rode into a 5 foot ditch which had become part of a river and another came off his bike while descending a steep hill.
"Despite everything, we all felt a sense of achievement in having completed the journey and in raising money for such worthy causes."
The team in total raised over £11,800.
Don Brereton CB, Director of Motability, commented: “Last year Royal & SunAlliance Motability raised over £17,000 for Motability, and we are very grateful for their hard work and dedication raising funds year in, year out. Thanks to the efforts of the cyclists, and all the sponsors who made the event possible, a very substantial amount of money was raised to not only benefit Motability, but also Cancer Research UK.
