A WIDE-RANGING conference on all aspects of insurance fraud has been organised by a Liverpool barristers’ chambers.

In the first such event of its kind to be organised by a chambers in the city, 150 delegates including solicitors, insurers, claims investigators and barristers have been invited to attend the one-day conference at Liverpool town hall on October 18.

They will be joined by police representatives, medical experts, and forensic engineers, who will talk about spotting fraudulent claims in relation to vehicle damage and other crimes. It has been organised by Oriel Chambers, based in Water Street.

Graham Williams, a barrister at the Chambers and an expert on insurance fraud, said it was appropriate to stage the event in Liverpool because of the high number of insurance claims going through the region’s courts.

Mr Williams said: “The aim of the conference is not just to raise awareness of people in the insurance industry, but to raise their game at tackling the problems.

“It will be a very broad-based talk in relation to the enormous amount of fraud and suspected fraud litigation going on in the city.

“The North West in general has an awful lot of claims passing through its courts.”

A substantial amount of delegates attending the event will be from the north west region.

Delegates will hear talks on a range of subjects, including combating fraud, sanctions against people making fraudulent claims, and the burden of proof regarding fraudulent claims.

There will also be presentations on data protection, fraud rings, and dealing with staged accidents and “ghost passengers”.

Medical experts will give talks on subjects including the false signs that people give in relation to spurious medical injuries.

Police representatives will hold seminars on credit card fraud and public liability claims.

The conference will be held in Liverpool’s town hall.
